As someone who was at the university during the time this went on, and ran cross country with Fr Plow as our team chaplain, all I can feel is a broken heart for this young woman and disgust for the university and it’s handling of this situation. I hope more alumni pay attention to what’s happening here
One of the most telltale warning signs is when you sense an air of self righteousness that is so thick that you can smell it. Don’t let your children be around such people; I don’t even care if they were bishops, don’t do it!
Fr. Dave's response to this article was disturbing, but not at all surprising. Here is what one of my colleagues wrote to me about after reading the article and the response: "Disgusting but consistent. It really is so pathetic. A priest entering a girl's dorm room at any time of any day is inappropriate, but Fr. Dave's response is just one more glaring sign of how disordered our modern age is." I have a priest friend who tells me how he feels sometimes like people are looking at him as a child molester when he is out in public wearing his clericals. I understand his discomfort more and more with every passing year. When I tell people where I teach, it's like I'm suddenly in a misogynistic, charismatic cult.
Exactly. I regret going there so badly. I can't believe the things I heard and saw and the lies and manipulation and lack of protection for the students. The spiritual gaslighting and abuse was happening all the time. The whole charismatic movement in my experience is a place where emotional manipulation flourishes; made my skin crawl.
Hi Jenn, thank you so much for reporting on this so thoroughly and with so much compassion for victims. Are you open to hearing about mishandling of abuse at a school outside of FUS? It partially involves the women's branch of the TORs at a Newman Center but I understand if you want to keep your focus on Steubenville and I don't want to spam your inbox unnecessarily.
He laughed at my friend who tried to go to confession w him and he wouldn't hear anything he just kept laughing so my friend got up and left. This friend was a “party” type and I think he just decided the friend wasn’t worthy or something.
I knew it! I freaking knew it. I was always so uncomfortable around him despite his persistent popularity; he had inappropriately close relationships with a few of my friends. I hated when he was around (not to mention several times he was drunk).
The idea ISN’T to take down an orthodox catholic college; Lord knows we need them desperately! The IDEA is to stop giving a free pass to some who take advantage of all the external appearances of orthodoxy to deceive people.
Start being generous! Hear confessions when students need it even at hours that are inconvenient! Souls need it! Stop promoting these foolish self righteous external displays, and actually promote genuine holiness!
Being a catholic, being a saint, is a contact sport, and often there are counterfeits who pass themselves off as such when they’re really not. But EVEN THEY can become saints. They better start quickly, because a day is coming when they may hear “Depart from me…”
